We were chased out of the water by an distant typhoon, so our host offered to drive us around the island. Our Hachijojima day tour was a nice chance to see the cultural and natural beauty of this small island, located about 180 miles south of Tokyo. One of our first stops was a preserved, old home where we found the stonework and old mosses just beautiful.
Even guard rails along the highway were interesting:
Hachijo island is very balmy, with heavy vegetation so I seized every opportunities to look for bugs:
The ashitaba plant, endemic to Hachijo, has many purported health benefits. I wrote about it over on the Spatula Queens blog in the post, The Tomorrow Plant.
Since I opened with the wild water of Hachijo’s shore, I’ll close with a lovely waterfall we visited inland:
