Doug and Julie have been watching a very large frog that took up residence in their Koi pond a few months ago. At first very shy, it now stays put while Doug cleans the pond filter and tends the water plants. Josh took photos and we turned to our handy reference book, Florida’s Fabulous Reptiles and Amphibians. We are pretty sure it is a bull frog, Rana catesbeiana. The book says they are voracious eaters and Doug reports that there are many fewer baby Koi in the pond this year….

Hi–
I have a small pond in my backyard, with a beautiful bullfrog that I love. Someone just gave me a turtle, and I am worried about putting him in the pond with my bullfrog. Should I be? Looks like you have a gorgeous pond so I thought perhaps you could help me.
Thanks–
Jamie
Thanks Jamie. We are sorry; we don’t know the answer to your question. We love turtles too but would hesitate to introduce one to our pond not only for fear of disturbing the frog but because turtles are known to eat pond plants – water lilies in particular.
